The “Bring £1 to Work” event on Friday 12th October, run by the Berkshire Community Foundation through its Berkshire Give a Child a Chance campaign and supported by Time 106.6Fm, gave local companies and schools a unique opportunity to help disadvantaged children and young people in Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead! £4,500 was raised during the day itself, with a further series of pledges bringing the total up to over £14,000!
40 local companies and schools participated in the event where employees and children were encouraged to each donate £1. All monies raised were then collected by volunteers during the day. The fundraising started at Slough station where £214 was raised and culminated in a final total of £4,500. More money has been collected over the following weeks as some schools and companies are running their own campaigns. For example, MARS are running their “Smile” campaign during which their employees have engaged in a number of fundraising activities including an Auction of Promises, tombolas, carol singing and an eBay shop.
Mr. Culkeen from Langleywood School stated that they were “very pleased to take part in such a worthy cause” and Agata from Fullers Logistics expressed her enthusiasm about the event and stating Fullers interest in taking part in a project which helps local children. “We will do even better next year”, she added. Other major organisations included Barclays, MacDonalds, NatWest, Sara Lee and Slough Borough Council.
Among the collectors were local MP Fiona Mactaggart, Councillor David MacIsaac (dressed up as a lion!) and the Berkshire Community Foundation's Chairman Richard Griffith–Jones who, together with a whole host of other willing volunteers, visited a number of companies and schools and showed great commitment and enthusiasm.
For over 20 years, Berkshire Give a Child a Chance has helped countless children and young people benefit from a wide range of educational and recreational activities in the area. The Berkshire Community Foundation is committed to helping groups and individuals make a lasting impact in their local community by raising funds to provide a permanent source of funding to tackle the grass roots needs in our local community.
