'The Hidden Need in Berkshire' survey, commissioned by Berkshire Community Foundation, identifies that, whilst Berkshire is one of the most prosperous counties in the UK, there are significant pockets of deprivation across the county and a large number of people who are suffering disadvantage. These issues are often magnified by the prosperity that surrounds them however, even amongst the affluent there are many individuals with desperate personal need.
The research shows that the key areas of concern vary greatly across Berkshire but are predominantly split across two geographical areas; rural West Berkshire and, the more urbanised, East Berkshire.
East Berkshire encompasses the five unitary authorities of Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead, and Wokingham. The survey reports large pockets of unemployment, deprivation and poor educational attainment across this area together with more ‘inner city’ issues.
The problems in West Berkshire are associated with poor access to services, isolation and lack of affordable housing. Those affected are often also disadvantaged in other ways i.e. elderly, disabled, or seeking employment.
