Give a Child a Chance

What are the criteria for group applications?

You do not have to be a registered charity to apply but the group must give direct help and benefit to children aged 18 or under (including pre-natal groups). Grants are given for a specific project or piece of equipment.  National or regional organisations may not apply unless the local branch of that organisation will use the grant locally. Groups of young people involved in conservation, environmental issues or work in their community will also be considered. We are particularly concerned to reach small groups and organisations. We will require a copy of your most recent accounts with the completed application form.

What are the criteria for individual applications?

Applications can be made on behalf of individual children. These applications must be backed by two references from people of standing in the community e.g. Doctor, Teacher or Community Worker. The referees are sent a copy of the completed application form and are asked to provide information to support the application. They may also need to supply us with follow up information.  Please note that applications that do not include referees will not be considered.

What can be funded?

For groups we can fund general equipment, project funding, hire of rooms, events, toys, and play equipment.

For individual children we can fund computers, wheelchairs, specialist sensory equipment, funding for playgroups, and family holidays. Please note that grants cannot be made payable to an individual, and cheques are made out to suppliers of goods or services.

What cannot be funded?

Grants are not given for overseas travel, vehicles, research projects, permanent staff salaries, to pay individual debts or bills, carpeting or flooring, or to relieve a statutory body of its responsibilities.

What are the closing dates for applications?

For both group and individual applications, the closing dates are 15th January and 15th May each year.  Applications are limited to one per organisation or individual per year and priority will be given to applications from new individuals and organisations.

How do we apply?

We strongly advise all potential applicants to contact a member of our Grants team on 0118 930 3021 to discuss their requirements before completing their application.

How are applications assessed?

When you apply we will check that your application meets our funding criteria and you have sent all the relevant information. Applications are assessed initially by a member of the BCF Grants team and are then presented at the next available panel meeting.  Decisions will be advised within 6 weeks of the closing date for each grants round.

How are grants monitored?

All successful applications will be provided with a monitoring form which, as well as looking at grant expenditure, asks for feedback on the difference the grant has made to your group.

What happens if the application is unsuccessful?

We will explain why your application was not successful and provide guidance as to whether you should apply again.
